I was thinking that one reason the age of politicians tends to skew high (putting aside the population different between the Boomers and GenX) is that there are few opportunities for younger people to get experiences as candidates. Maybe the solution could be youth parties, where anyone can join and help with campaigns, but only people under 30 can run as candidates? This would give young people experience in political communications and formulating policy.

My theory is that having local-only posts encourages a stronger community, which encourages more posting in general, which leads to more federated AND more local posts.

I believe that offering local-only posts *strengthens* federation.

(Comparative stats above were collected by me looking at the instance/activity endpoint on similarly sized servers to Friend Camp.)

when i was learning code one of my teachers, who obviously used to be an English teacher, would always asked "wherefore X"?

that is, not only do you need to know HOW to use a technology, but you need to know WHY you should use it, in what cases, and when you should probably stop using it

i wish that more tech articles included this because, frankly, i don't know how you even get off the ground if you don't know why you're using a particular technology

this morning I finished a long writeup of the #cyberdeck construction process across four different prototypes, starting over a year ago to the mark IV build I completed last week

atreus.technomancy.us/decklog and
atreus.technomancy.us/decklog2

lets talk about sexts,
lets talk about you and me,
lets talk about that dark web hacker man who wants 0.8 BTC to erase his copy of your sexts
Have you heard of the band 1023MB?

Learn you a regexp for great good!

Regular Expressions are a really neat construct that's a little opaque, but very powerful as you learn.

Here's a site to teach you! It's really really cool!
regexcrossword.com/

things that probably exist, but if they don't, they should:
a browser plugin that hooks into the bookmark system and silently archives pages you marked

(shouldn't be too hard to build one _in theory_, but I suspect the plumbing between "the things outside the browser" and "the browser" is harder than it should be.)

It is not exactly new story and I am not sure if this made the rounds in fediverse but a few days ago #archiveofourown won the hugo award on best related work. We have a huge #FLOSS community here but we don't talk nearly enough about this project.

#ao3 is an unique opensourced project that is not male dominated and also not started by people who were fulltime engineers but fans who decided enough is enough and we need to own our servers.

Congrats to Ao3!

Any mastonauts have good reading resources on #polyamory #nonmanogomy and #queer #relationships?

I found a book that piqued my interest but I’d rather see if anyone else has a rabbit hole they enjoyed going down before I make my own.

(Please RT) How would you feel about news publications hosting their own Mastodon instances?

Holy shit, never considered that, but this is likely accurate.

ahh yes, the newcomers are discovering the joys of getting beep booped to death by their notifs

masto culture is to give likes, boosts and follows very freely, you will always have notifs

Hello all! I'm new!

I'm a Canada born, Switzerland based poly man. Married for almost 2 years. Open with my spouse since about when we started dating. Seeing some others long distance.

As is tradition: (preferably espresso or cold brew).

That awkward moment when you aren't sure if you get paternity leave for your wife's and meta's kid...
